The process

How a Biomass Gasification Power Plant Works

Biomass is converted to producer gas in a downdraft gasifier, then used to generate power or heat. Veera units are small-scale, decentralised plants.

  1. 1

    Biomass Feeding

Wood chips, husk or shells up to 50 mm and under 15% moisture.

  2. 2

    Air Pre-Heating

Pre-heated air enters the gasifier for efficient conversion.

  3. 3

    Downdraft Gasification

Biomass converts at 950–1,150 °C and atmospheric pressure.

  4. 4

    Tar-Free Producer Gas

Gas with CO above 22%, H₂ above 18% and CH₄ above 5%.

  5. 5

    Power Generation

The gas runs a generator set, or any heating application.

  6. 6

    Char Removal

3–6% char is generated and removed manually.

The gas

What Comes Out: Clean Producer Gas

Proprietary air pre-heating gives a tar-free gas with the composition below.

Producer gas composition

Carbon monoxide (CO)> 22%
Hydrogen (H₂)> 18%
Methane (CH₄)> 5%
Carbon dioxide (CO₂)< 11%

Remaining gas is nitrogen. Calorific value above 1,100 kcal/Nm³.

Questions and Buying Terms

What is a biomass gasification power plant?

It converts solid biomass such as wood chips and agro-residues into clean, tar-free producer gas at 950–1,150 °C. The gas runs a gas generator for power, or can be used for any heating application.

What biomass can I use?

Wood chips, agro-residues, coconut shells, sawdust, rice husk and other organic waste. Feedstock should be under 15% moisture and up to 50 mm in size.

How much does a biomass gasification power plant cost?

The four models shown here range from $9,700 (G10, 10 kW) to $20,500 (GCP-50, 50 kW). A 150 kW container model is also available at $42,000. Prices are ex-works.

How much biomass does it use?

Based on the catalog figures, about 1 to 1.4 kg of biomass per kW of capacity per hour, for example 12–14 kg/hr for the 10 kW G10 and 50–60 kg/hr for the 50 kW GCP-50.

What is the producer gas made of?

Carbon monoxide above 22%, hydrogen above 18%, methane above 5% and carbon dioxide below 11%, with the remainder nitrogen. The calorific value is above 1,100 kcal/Nm³.

Can I monitor the plant remotely?

Yes. The units have a temperature indicator and a remote monitoring facility controllable through a mobile phone. Biomass feeding and ash removal are manual.
